Rejuvenation of Nonprofit

After struggling for years to find the right funding opportunities, in this economy it became apparent that the nonprofit route was the best avenue to choose. As such, the Hollywood Theatre Preservation, Incorporated, a 501(c)3 that was started in the 1990’s, has been reenergized effective December 2007.

The reenergized Hollywood Theatre Preservation, Inc. is going to focus on foundation and corporate donors to help bridge the financial gap between current city/neighborhood funding and the actual needs of reopening the Hollywood theater.

Restoration

The Hollywood Theater is an art deco style theater, designed by architects Liebenberg & Kaplan. Grand opening was on Saturday, October 26, 1935. Mr. Rubenstein, the first owner and manager, stated in an October 25, 1935 article in the East Minneapolis Argus “I believe the people of East Minneapolis are due for a big surprise when they step into this magnificent temple of amusement for the first time. We have spared no money to make the Hollywood the outstanding theater of the northwest”. We believe it is time to bring this energy back to life.

The Hollywood Theater has sat empty for almost 20 years. It should be the east anchor of the Northeast arts community. The Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission has designated the Hollywood as an architecturally significant landmark. We want the Hollywood Theater to regain its status as a jewel of Northeast Minneapolis, a ruby sitting proudly with the diamonds, which are the downtown theaters.

It is with great regret that we give notice of the suspension of the nonprofit organization, the Hollywood Theater Preservation, Inc. After 4 years of jumping through all the hoops put in front of us, we were left with nothing but empty, broken promises. We have determined that our city councilman and the neighborhood task force prefer that a developer spearhead the project.

We would like to thank everyone who volunteered to help, and a special thanks to those people who had pledged money.
